These Saturday morning workshops are about much more than simply learning techniques. They are a chance to slow down, reconnect with creativity and spend time in an encouraging artistic environment with other people who enjoy making things by hand.

Guided by Scottish artist Kirsteen Lyons-Benson BA (Hons), each session combines practical teaching with freedom to experiment, helping students build confidence while developing their own personal style and ideas.Workshops will explore a wide variety of materials and approaches over time, from expressive painting and observational drawing to mixed media, sculpture and silver-clay jewellery making.

Inspiration will come from colour, nature, texture, Scottish light, contemporary art and the creative process itself. Whether you are returning to art after many years or starting for the very first time, these workshops are designed to be welcoming, uplifting and creatively energising.

The world has a bright face as well as a dark one — these workshops aim to help people reconnect with that brighter side through creativity, imagination and shared artistic experience.

All materials and guidance are provided during the workshops, and the atmosphere is intentionally relaxed, informal and encouraging.

There is no pressure to create “perfect” artwork — the focus is on exploration, enjoyment and discovering new ways to express yourself creatively. Students are encouraged to experiment, take creative risks and develop confidence in their own artistic voice over the six-week courses.

The workshops take place within the welcoming creative environment of Fabode Ceramics in Sighthill, Edinburgh, bringing together visual art, craft and community in one inspiring space. Small group sizes allow for personal support and individual feedback, while also creating opportunities to meet like-minded people and become part of a growing local creative community.

Kirsteen’s teaching style is shaped by a lifetime surrounded by art, years of professional creative experience and a belief that creativity should be accessible to everyone — not only trained artists. Her workshops combine practical skills with encouragement, humour and imaginative thinking, helping people reconnect with creativity in a genuine and meaningful way.

Each workshop begins with artist Kirsteen Lyons-Benson demonstrating a painting approach, creative process or artistic technique to inspire the group and provide ideas for the session ahead.

These demonstrations are designed to be relaxed, accessible and encouraging rather than formal or rigid, helping people feel confident enough to begin creating in their own way.

From there, participants are free to explore their own artwork with guidance and support throughout the session. Some people may choose to follow elements of the demonstration closely, while others may use it simply as a starting point for their own ideas and creative direction.

The workshops are designed to encourage individuality, experimentation and enjoyment rather than strict outcomes or pressure.Because every group is different, the atmosphere remains flexible, creative and responsive to the people attending. Over time, students naturally develop skills, confidence and their own artistic voice through regular practice, inspiration and shared creative experience.
